- There are some new gadgets that can
monitor an automobile’s use. One is the Road Safety RS-1000, a box
approximately six inches square that can hook into the data link in many
cars. It keeps tabs on the speed and turns, responding with different alerts
if driving habits are outside of acceptable norms. The device records
activity, which can be downloaded to a personal computer via a USB
connection and reviewed. The unit runs approximately $280.

utility called CutePDF that you can install and use to generate PDF files.
It works like a printer. When the software is installed, it creates a
printer named CutePDF Writer that you can select when printing a document.
Instead of printing to a printer, it generates a PDF file in the printed
format. The files that are created are compatible with Adobe Acrobat
reader and may be viewed by anyone who has the Adobe reader installed.

Microsoft has
entered the mapping game, with a new web site. While the site is
currently in beta, it provides some new features to compete against
current mapping sites. It includes satellite photos, and a bird’s eye
view available for metropolitan areas via pictures taken from a plane.
Other capabilities include a cookie-based scratch pad for retaining
locations that you’ve selected before, and a click-and-drag feature used
to define a map area for enlargement.
